Daily UX Writing Challenge is a free 15-day challenge that sends you a short UX Writing exercise daily. The challenge consists of a scenario and the number of words you have to work with.

You can sign up here to receive a UX Writing prompt in your inbox every weekday for 14 days followed by a full-length content challenge on day 15.

I’ve signed up for the UX Writing Challenge to sharpen my skills and practice UX Writing. I used Figma to develop the UI in addition to writing the microcopy.

So, I received my first prompt as,

Scenario: A traveler is in an airport waiting for the last leg of a flight home when their flight gets abruptly canceled due to bad weather.

Challenge: Write a message from the airline app notifying them of the cancellation and what they need to do next.

Headline: 45 characters max

Body: 175 characters max

Button(s): 25 characters max

My Solution:

Thought Process

Crucial situations such as last-minute changes while traveling often cause frustration among users. The copy that you write for such a situation must be clear, concise as well as informative. It must not leave the user confused. Flight details should be included to avoid inconvenience if the user has booked more than one flight. The reasons for cancellation and the next possible steps should also be there.

Before completing the challenge I tried to analyze the flight cancellation messages of airlines such as Indigo, Vistara, and Air India. I found their messages were more formal as they were trying to inform users as well as maintain their brand voice and tone.

While writing, I tried my best to calm down the user by explaining why their flight is canceled and what they can do next. I kept my message less formal and more empathetic.

Instead of automatically rescheduling the flight, I gave the user the option to reschedule the flight at their convenience because everyone has their preferences and circumstances. Some users might want to opt for other means of transportation because of the weather, whereas some users may decide to wait for the weather to become better.

I am sure that it could be better. If you have any suggestions, I am here to learn!
