This blog is part of the 15-day UX Writing Challenge presented by Daily UX Writing. So, I received my second prompt as:

Scenario: The user works in graphic design. While critiquing a design in a mobile app, their phone abruptly turns off. When they restart the phone, they reopen the app.

Challenge: Write a message that the user will read immediately upon opening the app. What do they need to know?

What steps (if any) do they need to take to recover their content? What if they can’t recover the content?

Headline: 40 characters max

Body: 140 characters max

Button(s): 20 characters max

Today’s task demanded an error message for a user who was panicking and thinking, “Did I just lose all my work for nothing?” Any designer in the middle of some unfinished design wants to go back to it as fast as possible.

If you’ve ever been in such a situation, I’m sure you panicked. So is the user in our case.

My Solution:

Thought Process:

Here, our user’s phone crashed abruptly, which ultimately resulted in the crashing of our design app. Now, the maximum chances are that the user will restart his/her phone and then launch our app to check whether his data is saved or lost.

When the user launches the app, I want him/her to be assured that there is nothing to worry about and that we got your back. Therefore, I mentioned in my headline the situation “Unexpected Crash?” and I also tried to get the user out of anxiety with the words “Don’t Stress!”

In the body copy, I tried to explain to the user why there is no need to stress. Here, I also tried to deal with the situation where the data is not autosaved or the user is having trouble restoring his previous work.

The two CTAs that I mentioned guide the user on what they need to do next to get back to their work and continue designing.

I opted for a brief and clear message. I tried my best to sound sincere and to step into their shoes for a minute and then write. Well, you might have some other thought process. Let me know if you have any suggestions!
